Sport is about Romance, not realism

So with the world cup in full swing its definitely a great way to start this blog...

I was at the National Hockey tournament last week where i was coaching a team. While we were there we watched the Bafana - Uruguay game. This led to a little bit of a disagreement with a fellow coaching staff member as he went on and on about the realist approach to watching Bafana. This view seemed to be echoed by hundreds of Facebook friends too. This got me thinking. and i have this question . . .

Why watch sport if your are a realist? Sport is about Romance!

You see this world cup has reminded me of a few things that remind me of the romance in sport!

- Africa is hosting the world cup - Seriously, its here not in Europe again

- Romance is alive and well in sport. Spain lost to Switzerland, New Zealand drew to Italy, Mexico beat France and of course Serbia beat Germany!

South Africa take on France today needing to win and hoping that their is a winner in the other game, this coupled with having to overturn a 5 goal difference deficit at the same time. No one gives us a chance. I do. i believe in the romance that is football, i belief in the 93rd minute winner i believe in South Africa.

Don't get me wrong, should we not succeed today, ill be disappointed, but i will still love my country i will still love my team. Proudly South African, Proudly a romantic for sport!

I like you in that yellow shirt. It brings out your eyes!

problem with romance is we end up with a broken heart!
